One of my favorite artists lately has been Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, better known by his stage name, Kid Cudi. He is a rapper that I feel has been very influential in the rap culture. He’s brought us a different style of relaxed music, combined with a little techno here and there, and his unique beats used to rap to. He has aimed to describe to the listener the meanderings of his mind through his lyrics and music on his first album Man on the Moon: End of Day. He tries to show us on the same level as other rappers describe their club to crib seductions, and different gang battles they have. I think he has done a good job of showing that in his song Mr. Solo Dolo, where he tells about his father’s death and his issues of copping with his hard teenage life that still preoccupies his mind today. His second album Man or the Moon: The legend of Mr. Ranger portrays his drug influenced life of him on a road to nowhere. It talks about him getting roped into the life of drugs and women, and how he contemplates his own life. It’s shown very well in the song Erase Me. Kid Cudi has a pretty unique rap style, it reminds me of another group called Chitty Bang. They both talk about life and how things should be certain ways. They both seem to be trying to portray their own thoughts and what issues and hardships they’re going throughout, with the vivid descriptions throughout their raps. They both also have very unique beats that they rap to. Kid Cudi has an almost sad relaxed feel to it, while Chitty Bang has the same uniqueness that Cudi does, but Chitty Bang has a fast paced beat usually and they use more techno within the beats they rap to. In the song Pursuit of Happiness, Kid Cudi has a line about his personal troubles. “tell me what you know about them night terrors every night
5 am, cold sweats wakin’ up to the skies” this line is telling about his trouble dealing with his dads death and how he wakes up scared and sweating in the middle of the night. I thought this was a memorable line because it shows us his trouble in life and issues cause by it. I thought it showed the listener his love for his dad and how he still misses him. I would have to agree with critics’ when they say he is a unique rapper with a unique style, trying to give the listener his views on life through his music and that he is trying to show us the thoughts of Kid Cudi. I personally feel that he has a style that a lot of different people would like, and that his music is definitely worth the time and money to listen to it.
