Juno is a movie about a girl living through a teenage pregnancy. It was written by Minnesota screen writer Diablo Cody. Juno is surprised, along with the rest of the community, that she is pregnant by her admirer and track runner Paulie. She initially decides to abort the pregnancy, but has a change of heart. She finds a couple, Mark and Vanessa, wanting to adopt a baby in the classifieds to give her child to. Juno easily makes friends with Mark because of his love of rock music and somewhat care free attitude. Bonding with Vanessa was more challenging because of Vanessa’s unease about the possibility that Juno could change her mind. Mark confides in Juno and tells her that he wants to continue chasing his music dreams and he wants to leave Vanessa. As him and Juno are fighting over this new development, Vanessa walks in, Juno storms out of the house as the couple fights and breaks up. Obvious to everyone but themselves, Juno and Paulie are in love. At one point of the story, to make up after a fight, Juno fills Paulie’s mailbox full of orange tic tacs. Juno and Paulie are portrayed by Ellen Page and Micheal Cera. I believe that they capture the essence of teenage frustration and confusion remarkably well. Juno McGraff is not like other teenage girls in the way she dresses or in her interests but her personality is identical to the vast majority. She is very impulsive when it comes to big decisions and slow to admit her true feelings. One major theme of the movie is working through hard times with the support of family and friends. Another theme is being true to yourself. We see this theme in the ending scenes where Juno and Paulie finally realize they love each other. “Sweet, perceptive, sharp and near-perfect, Juno is a memorable film that will still be great viewing decades after its release” says critic Brian Webster of the Apollo Guide. I agree with Brian, Juno has the makings to be a timeless film, deserving of both our time and money.
