10 Things I Hate About You is a character driven movie. It starts with Heath Ledgers character Patrick Verona. Patrick Verona is rough around the edges. He has a bet with the most popular guy in school to get a girl. The girl Patrick is trying to get Kat, played by Julia Stiles. Kat is a feminist that does not go along with the rest of society. When she finds out about the bet she gets really upset. She was actually falling for Patrick and he was falling as well. The bet makes everything crazy and unusual. Heath Ledgers performance was very believable. He plays a sweetheart and a bad boy in the movie. Both sides were portrayed amazingly. Kat also portrays her character with feministic qualities and grace all at the same time. Patrick’s motivation is to get the money for dating Kat and to get Kat to like him. In the end however his motive is to win Kat back after breaking her heart. Kat’s motivation in life is to be herself. She doesn’t want society to label her. She believes in being who she is and doesn’t care what people think of her. The theme of the movie is being yourself. When you are yourself other people may not treat you with respect at first, but when they learn about you they will understand your story. I agree with most critics. They said the story is charming and the actors picked for the movie were incredible. I don’t agree with the statement that the plot of the movie is boring and cliché. I believe that in the high school drama genre this ranked at the top of the list. This movie is definitely worth the time and the money. Even though it is a very old movie it is timeless. The movie is worth bringing out the VHS player again.
