How many children movies involve an evil villain who does nothing but make everybody else miserable. In the movie Despicable Me the character Guru does this so. Guru is not the typical villain though. He is more concentrated on blasting people in front of him in the Starbucks line or stealing children’s candy. Guru is voiced by Steve Carell and he gives him sort of an Italian accent to make him look more dangerous and vicious. Steve Carell does a good job as this character because he makes him look bipolar. Now usually it is a bad thing to be bipolar but in Guru’s occasion it just shows his soft side. Guru has a villain assistant named Dr. Nefario and he is helping Guru build a shrinking ray. With this ray, Guru will be able to shrink the moon and have it all to himself like he always dreamed of when he was a kid. He also has little minions called Minions. The minions don’t really help Guru in anything, just boost up his self- esteem. The minions are completely harmless and super adorable. Guru has an arch enemy named Vector who also wants Guru’s shrink ray. Guru is capable of doing anything to protect his shrink ray. The movie also involves three little girls to make it more of a comedy and get even more good feeling. They are Edith (Dana Gaier), Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and Margo (Miranda Cosgrove). Guru “adopts” them as a distraction so nothing will be suspicious on his “taking over the world plan.” Guru’s plan back fires when the girls actually bring out the kid in Guru and make him realize what a big and warm heart he has. This movie is really funny and is capable of watching by all ages. Roger Ebert thinks that the 3-D process in this movie is “dim” and “not worth paying for.” My opinion is that a 3-D movie doesn’t have to be all out there and “in your face”. It is completely obvious that it is 3-D and completely worth money. I really enjoyed this movie and it made me laugh the whole time. It is completely worth money and will make everybody go “AWWW.”
