In response to Sara’s first blog about Sugarland, I agree completely! Sugarland is a great band to listen to their music evokes certain feelings of determination. Jennifer Neetles and Kristian Bush have great musical chemistry and talent that can be heard in everyone of their songs. I interpret their song “Stuck Like Glue,” to be saying that they are stuck with each other and because of that they keep each other young and in love, no matter what. The feelings of this song contrast to the ones brought out by another one of their songs entitled “Stay.” This song explains the falling of an affair, first with the mistress begging him to stay with her and then at the end her realizing that he isn’t worth it and she can take care of herself. A similar theme about affairs is found in Garth Brooks’ “Thunder Rolls” and in “Your Love is a Lie” by Simple Plan. A great song that shows their adaption to any kind of music would be “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” which the group recorded with Bon Jovi. This song basically explains that even though the world is huge, the one place you always return to is home. Stephen M. Deusner from the 9531 Country Music Review claims that Neetles’ “readiness to push herself is admirable, but she never sounds comfortable on The Incredible Machine, never projects her personality so boldly. Instead, her vocals are primarily ornamental, dotting the title track with distracting callouts and repeatedly reverting to a wordless holler to convey drama.” I strongly disagree. Neetles is just putting her voice out there in a different form then main stream. You can’t blame her for trying something new and off the well beaten path!
