Eminem has long been known as America’s #1 rapper of all-time. This is a commonly known fact, as he has sold millions of albums in his many years as a rapper. Eminem’s music is mainly based off of his emotions and past experiences throughout his life, which tends to evoke feelings of power and joy. In comparison to other rappers of his time, Eminem really is similar to most other rappers. Rap itself generally talks about an artist’s past, as well as some of their hopes for the future. One of Eminem’s newest songs, “Not Afraid,” actually tells a story. That being said, the song is divided into three main parts. The first verse is the lithest, the second is self-critical, and the final verse is the most personal, as Monica Herrera said in her review. This song truly does capture and evoke emotions in all listeners. Throughout the song, Eminem repeats “We’ll walk this road together, through the storm/ whatever weather, cold or warm,” which gives the impression that no matter what challenges face you now or in the future, that you will overcome the challenge (Herrera, Monica). It’s a very simple, but quite powerful statement in the sense that the meaning of it can apply to one’s own everyday life, and the challenges you face. Another of Eminem’s widely popular songs is “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. One of his verses, “Told you this is my fault/look me in the eyeball/next time I’m pissed, I’ll aim my fist at the drywall/next time? There will be no next time-I apologize,” shows a sense of self-criticism, a darker aspect to Eminem. He is actually looking back on Rihanna’s troubled past, pertaining to relationships (Menachem, Michael). Eminem also be alluding to him being the bigger man and apologizing to whomever he may have been arguing with, instead of making things worse. Overall, Eminem is an all-time great rapper, and on a scale of 1-10, he is at least a 9.5, and is definitely worth the checking out.
