One of my favorite musical groups is Matt & Kim. In case you haven’t heard of Matt and Kim, they sound somewhat like a more popular indie band called Vampire Weekend. I love their original Indie sound and their inspired lyrics. Listening to their fast, cheerful music can easily put anyone in a good mood. Their sound is a lot like 80’s pop music and it makes you want to get up and dance! However, I do agree with critics that their sound has changed a little recently. Their newest album has the most ‘poppy’ sound out of any of their albums, however their music is still unique. One difference I’m starting to see is their lyrics seem to become more and more full of obvious meaning. One of their songs, “AM/FM”, off of their newest album Sidewalks not only has a positive sound to it, but also has some deeper, relatable lyrics. My favorite line says “piles of dreams and dimes ill take what’s in front and leave this mess behind.” Another newer song on their album Sidewalks, “Cameras”, has lyrics like “I see that we’re made of more than blood and bones.” Even though I am impressed with Matt and Kim’s most recent album, I will still always be a fan of their original, more quirky songs and lyrics from albums like Matt and Kim (2006) and Grand (2009). The song that first introduced me to Matt and Kim was off of their album Grand. The song, “Daylight”, has an electronic sound to it, along with unusual, but amusing lyrics. One of my favorite lines in the song is, “I miss yellow lines in my roads, some color on monochrome. Maybe I'll paint them in myself.” Although the lyrics are different, I feel like they leave space for your imagination, and for the listener to make the song have its own personal meaning. Even if electronic, indie music isn’t everybody’s favorite; I think that people who hear Matt and Kim can at least appreciate the bands originality and creative energy. I would recommend their music to anyone!
