Gorillaz is one of the most unique bands in the music scene today. They are widely known as the cartoon band because the actual members of the band try to keep their identities a secret by using cartoon characters to portray them. The type of music they produce is very hard to put in any one genre, because each song is almost never the same as any other song they have already released. For the most part, I would place them in either the experimental genre or even the electro rock genre. The “feel” of the songs are the same way as for each song the mood fluctuates. Some songs are upbeat and happy; others can be slow, dark and even depressing. As far as comparing them to a different band I can honestly say I don’t know of any band in history that produces music like they do, Gorillaz truly are one of a kind. The band recently released an album named The Fall and they defiantly did not deviate from their original ways one this album. The entire album was recorded on an ipad on the bands tour bus as they were on the road for their last tour! Just goes to show how much technology can do these days! A meaningful lyric from the Gorillaz would be from their very first hit song, “Clint Eastwood”. Here is the lyric, “I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad, I got sunshine, in a bag. I'm useless, but not for long, the future is coming on”. Not only is it memorable because it was from their most famous song, its memorable because sometimes, it can be very true. If you’re feeling down and useless, sometimes you just have to hope that tomorrow will bring happier things and you can enjoy life once again. I was very surprised to know that most critics like the Gorillaz music. The reason this surprised me is because when you think of a critic, you sometimes imagine a straight-laced person who picks out every little flaw in a song. But in this case, I guess the randomness and uniqueness of the Gorillaz music got critics on their side. Overall, the Gorillaz are a great band that travel as far away from the mainstream as possible, and I would certainly recommend them to anyone.
