Vampire Weekend is an Indie band that is newer to me; however I would say that they are one of my favorites. I agree with critics that one of the things that first struck me about them is their originality, and the way their music is made the way they want it, no matter how different. Their music is a unique mix of rock and electronic music. Most of the time, their lyrics are pretty serious, however I would say that their sound is very upbeat and electronic. I would say that their music is a lot like the other group I wrote a blog about, Matt and Kim. If you aren’t familiar with Matt and Kim, their sound is a lot like the more popular bands Cage the Elephant or Florence and the Machine. They only currently have two albums out, Vampire Weekend (2008) and Contra (2010), and I would say that both albums are very similar in sound and creativity. My favorite song from their first album is called “I Stand Corrected.” Although the sound is really what attracted me to the song, there are also some pretty powerful lyrics hidden underneath. My favorite line says “No one cares when you are wrong, but I've been at this far too long, to act like that when we should be in perfect harmony.” Their very similar second album, Contra is where my second favorite song “Diplomat’s Son” is from. The song has sort of a whimsical sound to it; yet again it has more serious lyrics. The most meaningful line in that song says “I know you’ll say I’m not doing it right, but this is how I want it. I can’t go back to how I felt before.” Indie music isn’t everybody’s favorite kind of music; however I would highly recommend Vampire Weekend to anyone who is looking for something new to listen to, with a one of a kind sound.
