Precious is hands down the most emotional, yet powerful movie I’ve seen in a long time. In this film, precious is a black pregnant teenager in Harlem in 1987. She lives with her abusive, self-esteem destroying mother. All though her life she is invisible to everyone. Precious has to struggle daily between her imagination of being a movie star and having fortune and fame with her harsh reality of being a young mom with no help from others besides herself. Precious goes through a lot of ups and downs but she is stronger than you think. Precious is played by Gabourey’s Sidibe. She does a breath taking performance. Gabourey’s acting makes you feel as if you are truly apart of her life. She’s a typical teenager, very moody with low self-esteem on a journey to find herself. Her main motivation is to be on her own and escape her mother. Her terrible mother is played by the one and only Mo’Nique’s. She has this sense of acting that makes you feel her feelings. This was one of her first roles as the bad guy and I have to admit, she did a pretty darn good job at it. She makes you want to just jump though your television and smack her! Mo’Nique’s characteristics are rude, abusive, negative and degrading. Her motivation in this film is to bring her daughter down anyway she can. Precious has many themes but, I think the main on would be that you make grow up with nothing and have the worst family but if you hope in yourself and determination you will come up from it on top. Betsy Sharkey from The Los Angeles Times states “Precious is a rare blend of pure entertainment and dark social commentary”. I highly agree with this critic. At times it shows what some people really go through but it also has some very deep and dark moments that make your heart break for this girl. Over all, I would defiantly take time to watch this movie. It will change your perspective on life and make you truly thank god for what you have in life.
