“Moulin Rouge” has everything you can want in a movie; romance, suspence, and even a catchy soundtrack! The story begins with Christian, a young man looking for love and something to write about, moving to Paris to follow his dreams. Luckily for him, an artist who lives above him crashes into his life and introduces him to the Moulin Rouge. Together, they will write a play for the Moulin Rouge’s star, Satine. However, the play needs funding, to be provided by the rich duke, who is also to be set up with Satine. Satine and Christian meet and she mistakes him for being the duke, but before she realizes who Christian really is, it’s too late; they are already in love. Throughout the movie, they have to hide their love from everyone to save the show. Christian is played by Ewan McGregor, who is a perfect fit because of his seeming innocence and desire for love. Satine is played by Nicole Kidman, who is also an excellent choice because she really shows all of her characters different dimensions and deeper issues. Satine is the perfect example of a deep character, because on the outside she seems like a actress just looking for fame, however her love for Christian and a more complicated twist in the plot show who she really is by showing her reactions in sticky situations. Viewers will probably take away a theme of love, quoted in one of the most famous and memorable lines in the film. “The greatest thing you can ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return.” I agree with critics that the way the movie is filmed, by the director Baz Luhrmann, really pulls the story together by providing us snapshots of the characters in the film and keeping us guessing about the end. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes an excellent, touching love story.
