As a kid, Mulan was my version of a Disney princess. Since Anastasia was from FOX and I didn’t like any of the other Disney Princesses I watched Mulan a lot. I agree that Ming-Na Wen did a great job as Mulan, I also liked B.D. Wong’s acting for Shang. Though Eddie Murphy is one of the more unforgettable humorous characters in Mulan, I did think Chien-Po, Ling, and Yao added a lot of humor too, especially during the songs. As for a theme I would agree that one of the themes would be brains over brawn, but I don’t think it would be the main thing. If you look at the cultural history in China, women had no power (and still really don’t). I thought Mulan was more about showing kids that women are just as capable of breaking social norms and saving the day as men are. Even though it’s a fictional story and a lot of things are exaggerated, I think the film did a great job of illustrating what would happen if a woman did break the norm. Mulan will always be one of my favorite films, I also think it’s worth the money and time to see it if you already haven’t (though most 90’s children grew up with it). –Caitlin M.
