In the depths of South Los Angeles is where this movie begins. You are first introduced to ex-convict O2 (Tyrese Gibson) and his son Junior in O2’s car. They begin with a conversation of O2 telling Junior that he will always come back for him no matter what knowing that even though he had been in prison for the past couple years, the love for his son had never left and he intended on staying a part of the rest of his life. Keeping that in mind little did O2 know he was being followed by his ex partner Meat (The Game) and his accomplices’. As O2 was driving home he had been stopped at a red light and this was the point that Meat’s “homeboys” decided to make their move and steal O2’s car from him at gun point, little did the thugs know Junior was sleeping in the back seat of the car and now they had even more than what they intended on taking from O2. The movie then turns into a fight against time with O2 doing everything he can to get enough money to get his son back. Early on in the movie O2 teams up with a random girl on the streets; Coco (Megan Good) that has ties with Meat and initially wants to get back at him for the pain he has caused her. Throughout the movie they team up as the modern day Bonnie and Clyde and begin to rob multiple banks but the funny thing is that they are only stealing from safety deposit boxes which actually all belong to Meat. In my opinion Tyrese Gibson had played the role of a heroic father very well even if what he was doing could have been labeled as wrong, he was doing it all to save his son which in my eyes over powers the wrong. Also Megan Good playing the accomplice was amazing, I feel as if this was one of her best roles she had ever played in any movie I had seen with her in it. Finally with The Game playing the big time thug role was great because with just his appearance you can totally put him into that role. I believe that the theme of this movie would be fight for your own; I say this because O2 had done everything in his power to save his son from robbing banks to putting his own life on the line nothing had stopped him. I do not agree with the critics at all on this movie. “A well-meaning B-movie that suffers from a cliche-ridden script and poorly drawn characters that fail to inspire much sympathy” said by Bob Townsend. In my opinion this quote was completely the opposite of how I had perceived the movie. Unlike the critics I had noticed Tyrese seemed to break out his bad boy shell and showed the true side of himself when it came down to his sons life in danger. Also with “Waist Deep” being one of my favorite movies of all time the rating of a B- is certainly not good enough. With that being said personally I would recommend this movie to many others that have similar tastes to my own. Finally I do believe that this movie is worth anyone’s time and money.
