The movie, Sweeney Todd, is based off of the famous Broadway musical. It is a story of a man, Benjamin Barker, who was sent away to an Australian prison colony after the evil Judge Turpin convicts Barker of a trumped- up charge because of his infatuation with Barker’s wife. Years later, Benjamin Barker returns with a vengeance as Sweeney Todd. He learns that Lucy, his wife, had been raped by Turpin and went mad driving her to swallow poison. He also finds out that the Judge had adopted his daughter Johanna and plans to marry her. As he teams up with Mrs. Lovett, the maker of meat pies, they create a plan to take revenge and make her meat pies famous again. Being that this is a Tim Burton film, it isn’t hard to believe that Johnny Depp is the main character. Depp brings life to this gruesome character as he always does. His performance that shows revenge, evil, sadness, and much more gives great dynamic to the character making you feel sorry and bad for someone doing something so terrible. He does an amazing job at creating a character that you want to win and be happy again. He brings a great darkness to the mournful Sweeney Todd which makes him even more intriguing. Because this film is also a musical, Johnny Depp was required to sing. This film really shows that Depp has the entire package when it comes to performing. His vocals were fantastic which did not surprise me one bit. In the movie, Sweeney Todd (Benjamin Barker) is a man seeking revenge. After years of being sent away, he returns with the intentions of getting back at Judge Turpin for ruining his life. He is very smart, witty, and clever which are many of Burton’s main characters. Mrs. Lovett, played by the amazing Helena Bonham Carter, is a lonely meat pie maker who developed a crush on barker years ago. She is a dark twisted lady but also shows her caring side throughout the film. One of the main themes of the movie is revenge and what kind of toll it can take on your life. I agree with many of the great reviews of this movie. With many of Tim Burton’s movies, you will either love it or hate it. This film is dark and witty with much humor. The musical effect which was new for Burton attracts a different audience as well. Overall, this movie is fantastic. If you like Tim Burton, then I believe you will enjoy this movie a lot. It is definitely worth the time and money as always.
