13 year old Bethany Hamilton dreams of becoming a pro- surfer. She lives in Hawaii with her family, who all help her practice to achieve her dream. One day during practice her arm gets bitten off by a shark. Throughout the movie you see her struggle and deal with this life changing experience. Soul Surfer is a movie based on the true life of Bethany Hamilton. Bethany gets played by Anna Sophia Robb, Bethany’s mom gets played by Helen Hunt, and her dad gets played by Dennis Quaid. They all do a great job in playing the roles. Anna Sophia does a great job of portraying Bethany and acts very well. Dennis also plays his part as the father great, while adding in some of his own personality. Dennis Quaid adds in some of his humor into the movie which is great. Anna Sophia embodies Bethany and she is motivated to do well and portray her even more, which she does very well. Bethany’s best friend in the movie is played by Lorraine Nicholson, which she plays very well and in some parts shows a good friend and in other parts doesn’t show a good friend, she plays both roles very well. The biggest theme of this movie is you can do what you put your mind to. Also don’t let events stop you from your dreams. Bethany had many setbacks and after one of the setbacks was limited but that didn’t stop her from trying to pursue her dreams. She set her mind to accomplishing her dreams, and she tried to make her dreams come true. The movie had great themes, and we can all take away the themes of the movie and apply them to our own lives. I agree with both critics’ on the movie, the movie is put together well and is also acted well. Webster talks about the different themes throughout the movie, which are close to the same themes as I thought. My overall opinion of the movie is that it is a great movie, and has a great story behind it. Soul Surfer is worth your time and money.
