P.S. I Love You stars Hilary Swank (Holly in the movie) as a young woman who just lost the love of her life. The movie tells the story of her struggle to get over her husband’s death and the many different types of love that one can come in contact with throughout a lifetime. On her 30th birthday she receives a cake that Gerry, her husband (played by Gerard Butler) had ordered for her before he died. This is the start of her journey. At different points in the movie she receives letters that he had written for her. Each letter instructs her to do some “task” that Gerry had prearranged for her. These different “tasks” are each supposed to help her move on and find new life after death. Hilary Swank does a wonderful of portraying the character of “Holly”, you feel each emotion that she expresses and it is a truly believable performance. Gerard Butler also does an amazing job, he does silliness perfectly and is great at telling Holly the stories she needs to hear. Also, Kathy Bates stars as Holly’s mother, Patricia. She does a nice job of being the ‘concerned mother” that is only looking out for her child’s well-being.
Each charter has a specific motivation in the film. Holly’s is to follow her husband’s last requests, Gerry’s is to help his wife be happy again, and Patricia’s is to protect her daughter from the pain and sadness she experienced when her own husband left. Each motivation also provides a theme within the movie. The first theme is of hopelessness, Holly can’t see beyond her grief and the future seems bleak without Gerry. Also is the theme of love, her and Gerry are meant to be together and that is shown throughout the movie. Critics, however, disagree. Lisa Schwarzbaum gave the movie a D+ and insulted all the characters. Melissa Rose Bernardo also seemed to hate it. She gave the film a C-. I do not agree in any way with their opinions on the chemistry between the lovers, the jokes involved, or where the movie was set. This movie is definitely worth your time and money. I even bought the DVD, if you’re looking for romance comedy or a new-begging this is the perfect movie.
